improv to improve

More adaptive. More confident. More you.

Sometimes it feels like everyone else got the instruction manual to life and you’re stuck making it up as you go along. When it comes to meeting new people, dealing with changes or conflicts, or even just deciding what to do with your time, maybe you get bogged down in doubt and second guessing. A group like this may help.

Is this the right thing for me?

Improv to Improve—this group—helps people increase their adaptability and spontaneity. These are the basic ingredients for resilience and for growth. If you want to learn about yourself, individual therapy is a great option, but if you want to improve how you relate to others, groups are amazing. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based method, along with Applied Improvisation (like they teach to trial attorneys and CEOs), this group helps people show up for their lives in ways that feel genuine and purposeful.

Skills learned in this group can help with:

  1. Interviews for schools or jobs.

  2. First dates & making friends.

  3. Conflict - engaging when important; resolving when necessary.

  4. Getting our needs met in relationships with parents, siblings, friends, teachers, anyone.

  5. Exploring who we are and what we want.

  6. Feeling more confident in our own skin anywhere, everywhere.

What happens in this group?

Meet the group.

  • This group is made of 8-10 people between the ages of 15 and 21 who struggle with mild to moderate anxiety, depression, social anxiety/awkwardness, neurodiversity and other issues. No experience in improvisation needed— in fact, it’s even better if you don’t!

Safe and confidential.

  • You’ll see the same people every week, get to know them and gain strength from real connections. Everyone is expected to respect the privacy of group members so you can be yourself.

  • All identities and gender expressions are welcome & respected. Group members use preferred pronouns.

Weekly meetings.

  • Improv to Improve group meets 1 time per week for 6 weeks, and then starts again with a new batch of members. Current group members are welcome to stay on for another round!

Support, Skills, and Education.

  • It’s easy to get isolated these days. Part of our focus will be on sharing mutual support and solidarity.

  • The other focus is on building skills to be the us we wish to be. There’s plenty of research showing the mental health benefits of improv skills in our everyday lives.
